Yes, She Has Some Bananas

osephine Baker was only fifteen when she made her New York VA singing and dancing debut in 1921 in the all-black revue Shuffle Along, with songs by Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle; she did 504 performances before emigrating to Paris in 1925 to escape the racism of the United States. The epitome of a wild woman, Baker achieved instant fame as huge crowds rushed to see her nude stage show called La Revue Negre; to keep the momentum going, she also starred in the Folies Bergere wearing nothing but a G-string of bananas. By 1926, she had her own nightclub, impressing much of Paris—including visitor Ernest Hemingway—with her beauty and grace. Becoming a French citizen in 1937, she worked tirelessly for the French Army during World War II and later for the NAACP to help end racial prejudice in the United States. In her later years, she adopted twelve children of all races, dubbing them her “rainbow tribe.”
